The Big Biscuit is proud to celebrate educators with our third-annual Teacher Appreciation Giveaway.

At The Big Biscuit, we believe teachers are the heart of every community, shaping future leaders with passion, creativity, and dedication. We’re celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week by giving communities the chance to recognize the educators who make a difference every day.

OUTSTANDING EDUCATOR STORIES

Amber Carlyle — Springfield, MO

Amber teaches in a cross-categorical classroom, working with students who have IEPs (Individualized Education Programs). She supports students across multiple grade levels and collaborates closely with teachers to ensure each student’s work is properly differentiated to meet their individual needs and goals.

Mrs. Carlyle consistently goes above and beyond for her students. When a student is in need—whether it’s Christmas presents, a bed, or other essentials—Amber does everything she can to make sure they are cared for. She is deeply committed to making sure her students have better opportunities and support than she did growing up.

Amber is a true inspiration to those around her, and other teachers naturally follow her lead. When she organizes initiatives, such as hosting breakfasts for families, others are eager to join and help. She also started the Wildflowers Girls Club, an after-school program designed to support and uplift female students. Seeing the impact, other teachers quickly got involved to support the effort.

Looking ahead, Amber hopes to partner with the functional skills teacher to create a small coffee and drink bar run by students. This project will give students—many of whom are nonverbal or face communication challenges—the opportunity to build essential life skills by managing and operating the shop, serving drinks to teachers and staff.

Jennifer Spears — Springdale, AR

Mrs. Spears consistently goes above and beyond to inspire a love of reading in every student she sees. Her passion for literacy shines through in everything she does—from thoughtfully curating engaging books to incorporating creative and meaningful media experiences. She transforms the library into a vibrant, welcoming space where imagination and curiosity thrive.

Her energy, creativity, and genuine enthusiasm make learning both fun and memorable. Students are not only excited to visit the library, but they leave feeling empowered as readers and thinkers. Mrs. Spears builds connections with students that foster confidence and a lifelong appreciation for literacy. They are truly fortunate to have a librarian who brings such heart, innovation, and joy to her role every single day.

Frank Newingham — Wichita, KS

Mr. Newingham has made a meaningful impact across his AVID, Nature’s Champions, and science classes by consistently promoting responsibility, teamwork, and environmental stewardship. He empowers students to make earth-friendly choices and take pride in caring for their environment.

Through his leadership, he has also developed a large-scale recycling program that teaches students how to responsibly recycle materials such as metal and outdated technology. This initiative not only builds real-world skills, but also serves as a successful fundraiser that benefits the entire school community.

Kaylee West — Fort Leavenworth, KS

This is Kaylee‘s third year teaching kindergarten. She is working on her masters as a reading specialist and will graduate in May 2026. She develops a close relationship, not only with our students, but with their families. The students move often, but many families keep in touch with her after they have moved.

On April 1st, she received a message from one of her previous students saying that he did the April Fool’s trick that she did to them last year in class.  She tore up a brown paper sack and put it in a Tupperware container and told the kids that she made them brownies. When she opened the container, she yelled April Fool’s!

She has students from prior years that stop her in the hallway every morning to say good morning to her because she helped them transition into a new school district in the middle of the year last year. I am beyond proud of what she has accomplished.

Amanda Walker — Carl Junction, MO

Mrs. Walker has made an impact as the Business Department Head, teaching Personal Finance and Graphic Design as well as leading FBLA. Mrs. Walker serves as both our local Gold Chapter Advisor and our Missouri District 17 lead advisor for FBLA and has facilitated 4 FBLA state championship events and 12 National Event Qualifiers.

Students know that Mrs. Walker will go out of her way to help them with anything they need, from providing supplies they may need to additional instruction and support. Mrs. Walker also makes an impact on our CTE Department staff as our Professional Learning Community Leader. She facilitates our weekly meetings, coordinates our yearly events, and guides the four Departments (FACS, Ag, Technology & Engineering, and Business) through all of the Missouri Department of Elementary & Secondary Education requirements.

Because there are lots of required activities, meetings, grant paperwork, and follow-up proof submissions for our department, Mrs. Walker does a phenomenal job organizing our CTE department to stay on top of deadlines and prepare for whatever is next in our calendar. Mrs. Walker is highly deserving of any and all recognition for her service to our community.

Hey Biscuit Nation! The holiday season is right around the corner, and for the third year in a row we are the presenting sponsor of Q104’s Pajama Jam and this year is even BIGGER! The first brand-wide Pajama Jam initiative will kick off on Monday, November 11th, at ALL Big Biscuit locations!

What is The Pajama Jam?

Pajama Jam is an annual pajama donation drive to ensure every kiddo feels warm and cozy during the holidays. Started by Jenny Matthews at Kansas City’s Q104, The Big Biscuit has been the proud sponsor of Pajama Jam for the past three years, collecting new PJs for kids in need at Operation Breakthrough. Now, Pajama Jam is bigger than ever!

“We are thrilled to have Big Biscuit joining us again this year to help with our Pajama Jam collection efforts! Q104 created Pajama Jam in hopes of providing just one pair of jammies per child at Operation Breakthrough. But our listeners continue to amaze us each year with their generosity, exceeding that goal! Having The Big Biscuit on board for convenient collection locations and support has helped tremendously. We are so grateful for their participation!” ~ Jenny Matthews + Todd Nixon

Brand-wide initiative

As we continue to grow, why shouldn’t Pajama Jam?! This year, we’re taking Pajama Jam beyond Kansas City. Our Guests in Tulsa, Oklahoma City, and Fayetteville communities now have the chance to give back to local kids in need.

All four of these organizations are non-profits that work year-round to provide families and children with the products, services, and necessities they need to be successful.

Help us make this Pajama Jam the best one yet! Find your local Big Biscuit and drop off donations between 6:30 am and 2:30 pm daily from November 11th to December 15th. We’re excited to see the community come together for a heartwarming cause. Thank you in advance for your support, Biscuit Nation!

We want to start 2024 on the right foot by giving back in a really simple, but vital way. That’s why on January 15, 2024, The Big Biscuit Corporate Office will host our 2nd Annual Blood Drive with the Community Blood Center. Last year we collected 41 units of blood, saving 137 lives! This year we are aiming to have 50 donors and make our impact go even further.

Donating blood in January is a great way to start your new year, and as a bonus…it’s also National Blood Donor Month! This dedicated month serves as a reminder of the constant demand for blood and the impact a single donation can have. It’s a time to celebrate the selflessness of donors and raise awareness about the ongoing need for a robust blood supply.

Our partners, The Community Blood Center explain, “Nine out of 10 individuals will need blood or a blood product at some time in our lives. And one out of every 10 hospital patients requires a blood transfusion.” This is why blood donation is so vital.

The Big Biscuit Blood Drive is the perfect spot to donate in 2024 whether it’s your first time or your hundredth! Last year we had 16 first-time donors and one individual donated for the 99th time!

So this January, 15th we ask you to consider joining us at the Second Annual Big Biscuit Blood Drive to donate. This is an opportunity for you to participate in National Blood Donor Month and make a lasting impact on someone’s life. So mark your calendars, spread the word, and make January 15th, 2024, a day filled with compassion and lifesaving contributions. Oh, also…there will be BONUTS and coffee for all 🙂

The most wonderful time of the year is rapidly approaching and The Big Biscuit is giving back in a BIG way. For the second year, we are partnering with Q104 and Jenny Matthews to sponsor The Pajama Jam.

What is The Pajama Jam?

The Pajama Jam is an annual pajama drive in the greater Kansas City area, benefiting the children of Operation Breakthrough. The goal is to collect as many pairs of new children’s pajamas this season. While the holidays may bring about warm, fuzzy memories for many of us, that’s not the reality for every member of our community. That’s why Jenny Matthews created this campaign in the first place, she said, “Toys are great. But, I wanted to come up with a way to give them something comforting, functional and brand new. Jammies!” Each pair of pjs donated goes straight to a kiddo in need in the KC community.

What is Operation Breakthrough?

Operation Breakthrough is a non-profit organization that has been working to help the children of Kansas City since 1971. They explain, “There are several critical services no person should live without. Operation Breakthrough provides educational programs, healthcare, parent programs, and emergency services to the children and families they serve.” To learn more about all of the amazing services Operation Breakthrough provides to the KC community check out their website

The Numbers

Last year across our 15 greater KC locations, The Big Biscuit collected 2,000 pairs of pajamas! This year we aim for 1,000 more. That’s right folks, we are hoping to collect 3,000 pairs of new pajamas for the Kiddos of Operation Breakthrough. We can’t do this alone, so please consider picking up a new pair of jammies next time you’re out shopping to donate to this worthy cause!

Stop by your local Big Biscuit and join us in bringing some holiday cheer and coziness to a very worthy cause. Collection bins can be found at any of our 15 greater KC area Big Biscuit locations between November 22nd and December 18th. We thank you in advance for your generosity.

The good news just keeps coming this season at The Big Biscuit. Not only were voted Kansas City’s Best Breakfast in KC Magazine earlier this year but now The Pitch KC. That’s right Biscuit Nation, we’re The Pitch KC’s Best Breakfast Winner for the third year in a row! The warmth we feel isn’t just from our ovens; it’s also the heartfelt appreciation for every one of you who took the time to vote.

What This Means to Us

At The Big Biscuit, our mornings start with the aroma of freshly baked biscuits wafting through the air, and your support has added an extra layer of joy to our daily routine. We love being a part of your breakfast traditions, KC. Whether you’re grabbing a quick breakfast on your way to work or savoring a leisurely morning meal with friends and family.

This achievement is not just a testament to our flaky, buttery biscuits but also to the incredible community we serve. Kansas City, you’ve embraced us with open arms these past 23 years. We can’t begin to tell you how much it means to us that you’ve turned The Big Biscuit into a place that holds special memories. That’s why we are so proud to be founded and headquartered right here in the heart of America: Kansas City.

To our patrons, old and new, thank you for trusting us to kickstart your day. Your smiles, stories, and love for B&Gs have fueled our passion for creating the best breakfast experience in town. Behind the scenes, our dedicated team works to ensure each plate is crafted with care and a sprinkle of love. Your votes inspired us to reach new heights in the breakfast world.

As we bask in the glow of this recognition, we remember that every biscuit we bake, pancake flipped, or cup of coffee poured are all small tokens of appreciation for the city in which it all started for us. From the bottom of our buttery hearts, thank you, Kansas City, for making us your Best Breakfast. Here’s to many more mornings filled with shared moments and, of course, biscuits that bring a smile to your face.

Howdy breakfast enthusiasts! We’re excited to announce that The Big Biscuit has been crowned Kansas City Magazine’s Best Breakfast of 2023! This isn’t just a win for us; it’s a victory for every pancake flip, egg crack, coffee pour, and biscuit baked within our restaurants.

Winning this award has made us stop and evaluate what makes The Big Biscuit KC’s Best Breakfast. It’s not just our fluffy big biscuits or the symphony of sizzling bacon. The passion goes into each plate, the secret ingredient that our cooks add – love. Okay, we know it sounds cliche….but we indeed love what we do! Walking through the doors of The Big Biscuit isn’t just walking into a breakfast restaurant; it’s walking into a celebration of the most essential part of your day, surrounded by people from your community.

OUR MENU
Our menu is a celebration of a breakfast and lunch journey. Of course, we have the classics like our famous Biscuits and Gravy or our Big BLT Sandwich. But don’t forget about our innovative twists like Cinnamon Roll Pancakes or the Kitchen Sink Scram-bowl (made with four hand-cracked eggs, smoked ham, bacon, sausage, cremini mushrooms, tomatoes, green peppers, onions, and cheddar topped with hash browns, buttermilk biscuit & sausage gravy).

But what makes The Big Biscuit so unique is the craveable food and the experience. The clinking of forks to empty plates, the hum of satisfied guests, and the warm ambiance all make your breakfast or lunch into a memory. We make The Big Biscuit a spot for everyone to come sit down and enjoy a nice meal in the company of the people they love.

On Wednesday, August 30th, 14 of our team members had the opportunity to volunteer at Harvesters Community Food Network in Kansas City, MO. This group was composed of both our restaurant and headquarters teams. From administrative assistants to marketing staff, to our president, everyone was excited to pitch in. The Big Biscuit works to stay involved in the community, and this was a great way to do it!

A Little Background on Harvesters

While at Harvesters, we learned more about their mission of feeding hungry people, and how they do it. First, we learned the definition of a food bank vs. a food pantry. Harvesters is a food bank, which means they supply food to food pantries, which then gets distributed to individuals and families in need. Next, we saw the map of the 26 counties across Kansas and Missouri that Harvesters distributes to. This broad network allows for 760 individual pantries to be stocked, helping feed over 226,000 people per month. Eliminating hunger is a big goal, but luckily Harvesters continually works hard to accomplish it.

What we did

While Harvesters has a lot of different tasks volunteers can help with, our team was assisting with the repackaging of fresh produce for a drive-thru style food pick-up. We were split into two teams, Team Onion and Team Sweet Potato. Each team opened 40/50 lb. bags of produce and split them into smaller sacks portioned for families. We worked for two hours and packaged over 2,000 lbs. of produce! There was definitely some friendly competition between Team Onion and Team Sweet Potato….we won’t say who won….(but between us, it was definitely Team Onion ;).

How you can Get Involved in the mission

This was such a great way for us to bond with each other and invest in the community over something so near and dear to our hearts at The Big Biscuit – food!
